Talisman were one of the UK’s top Roots Reggae bands in the later 70′s and early 80′s. The band’s prowess earned them support slots with acts as diverse as Burning Spear, The Clash and The Rolling Stones. The band were formed in 1977 and originally consisted of Bill Bartlett, Brendan Whitmore, Dennison Joseph, Desmond Taylor, Donald de Cordova and Leroy Forbes.

Peel played the band's debut single, 'Dole Age / Free Speech' on May 1981. Several months later, he saw the group perform in London on 3rd August. Impressed by their material, he invited the group to do a session for his show in September 1981, where they performed three tracks. After Peel's death in 2004, it was later found out that he had a copy of their album, 'Takin' The Strain' in his Record Collection: T.
