"With four records you can scarcely expect to represent an entire year’s output, so … the whole thing is shockingly random and arbitrary and prejudiced and so forth, and I say that without apology." (John Peel, 11 November 1999)

Peelenium

The Peelenium (or possibly Peelennium) was a selection of songs selected by Peel and his team from 1900 to 2000 in order to celebrate the last 100 years of music leading up to the millennium. It was initially scheduled to play out over the final 100 shows of 1999 (see Peelenium Broadcast Dates).

Four songs from the featured year were played as a block, introduced by 'The Voice' - Peel's wife Sheila. After the music finished, Peel returned with a list of events, compiled by "Lynn the office junior", and personal comments. Sheila would subsequently return in a regular announcing role with the Pig's Big 78 feature.

HistoryEdit

For the Peelenium John Peel and his producers took four tracks taken from each year of the last century, stretching from 1900 to the millennium.

Peel's musical history knowledge and record collection were used, along with research to find the most interesting tracks from a particular year. BBC Archive and Information and BBC Music Library were involved extensively in finding the necessary tracks and making sure that they actually were original recordings.[1]

The idea of the Peelenium was conceived as a musical way to celebrate the millennium, but also to illustrate how popular musical styles had changed over the century, and shaped the music we listen to today.[2]

The Peelenium began on Thursday 13 May 1999 with the year 1900.
