Ice Cold in Alex (1958) is a British film based on the novel of the same name by British author Christopher Landon. The film was about a group of army personnel and nurses attempting a dangerous and arduous trek across the deserts of North Africa during the second world war. The leader of the team dreams of his ice cold beer when he reaches Alexandria, Egypt but the problems don't won't go away.

"Walters and Helen provided the most ingenious movie dinner on the night when Ice Cold in Alex was being screened. Their flat in Croydon was unusually hot that night, since Walters had cranked up the heating to provide an authentic replication of the film's desert setting. Soon after, we were treated to a viciously spicy vegetable curry that left us gasping for a drink. Obviously lager was out of the question, at least until that famous moment in the movie when John Mills is rewarded with his own refreshing pint, so John asked if we would have a glass of water. 'Sure,' Walters piped up, 'help yourself.' John rushed to the sink, turned on the tap, held out his glass expectantly and waited. And waited. Walters and Helen began chuckling to themselves, which was when we realised that our hosts for the evening had become our tormentors: they'd turned off the water supply."
