High Dependency Unit was a psychedelic rock band originating from Dunedin, New Zealand. Formed in 1994 by Tristan Dingemans (guitar, vocals), Neil Phillips (guitar, bass) and Constantine Karlis (drums, percussion, synth, samples), the band released four albums, three of them were on Flying Nun records and several singles. Their last material was released in 2008.

On his 31 January 2002 show, Peel mentioned before playing a track from the band, that he hopes that when he goes to New Zealand in March, the band would buy him a drink there. It is not known whether he met the band when he visited the country, but he didn't seem to play any of their material after 2002.

Internet sources including Wikipedia interestingly also quotes Peel allegedly saying that the group were one of the 10 best bands in the world you've never heard of. It is not known where this quote came from, as Peel only played two tracks from the group on his shows and certainly did not mention that quote on his 31 January 2002 programme, the only time the band got played on his show on BBC Radio One.
