  • 06 December 2001: Inter Milan vs Ipswich, UEFA Cup, third round, second leg. Inter won 4-1 to go through. Whereas I’m in London, on my own…”
  • 22 January 2002: Manchester United v Liverpool, Old Trafford, Premier League. A 1-0 away win for Liverpool. JP: "Well tonight's result I have to say, both exhilarating and infuriating. • 28 August 2002: Blackburn Rovers v Liverpool, Ewood Park, Premier League. A 2-2 draw was disapponting to John: "If you're listening lads, a draw at Blackburn Rovers [is] frankly not good enough I think. No disrespect to Blackburn, but you've go to do better than that if you're going to win the title."

  • 04 December 2002: While Sheila and Alexandra were at Anfield watching Liverpool vs Ipswich compete for a quarter-final place in the Worthington Cup, JP was following the game whilst on air. His team's poor performance drew despairing criticism, i.e. "Do you know what I'd do? I'd say, you've got to earn the right to wear those red shirts, and until you do, then you can play in grey, or some other colour." Liverpool eventually won 5-4 on penalties.
  • 17 December 2002: Sunderland v Liverpool, Stadium of Light, Premier League. Liverpool's 2-1 away defeat at the hands of lowly Sunderland on Sunday afternoon continues a bad run of form that Peel finds appalling.

A 2-0 victory for Ipswich in the local derby at the weekend is celebrated by Peel playing extracts of the BBC's live radio commentary for the two goals. • 04 March 2003: Liverpool v Manchester United, Worthington Cup Final, Millennium Stadium, Cardiff. Liverpool's 2-0 victory in the cup on Sunday afternoon is marked on the same show in the same manner as the local derby above, with Peel playing recordings of Radio 5's commentary of the goals. A bad night for football, but a great night for music."
  • 16 July 2003: FC Cologne v Liverpool. A 1-3 away victory in this pre-season friendly. "A good win for our lads in Cologne, actually. Emile Heskey scored, which I'm always pleased to see cos I like him, I think he's a good lad. And two for Michael Owen."
  • 19 August 2003: Liverpool v Chelsea. A disappointing start to the new season for Liverpool, with a 2-1 home defeat in their opening match on Sunday 17th. Peel had raced back from a family holiday in France to be home for it. Of Liverpool's peformance he says, "I don't think it's going to be causing panic at Highbury or Old Trafford or indeed anywhere much really."
  • 26 August 2003: Aston Villa v Liverpool. Peel was less than impressed with the weekend's match, a 0-0 draw away at Villa. • 27 April 2004: Manchester United v Liverpool, Old Trafford, Premier League. A penalty converted by Danny Murphy gave Liverpool a 1-0 victory away to their old rivals at the weekend. It seems that Peel didn't feel in the mood on mark the occasion on his next radio show the following Tuesday: "I had been tempted [to dedicate a track to Danny Murphy] at the start of the programme, but then, you know, when the only thing that you've got to celebrate in an entire season is a successful penalty... • 16 October 2002: England vs Macedonia. A 2-2 home draw at Southampton in England's qualifying campaign for Euro 2004 did not impress Peel. "Was that the worst performance by an England team in about twenty years? I'd say it very possibly could have been." He was more impressed with Wales, who managed a 2-1 victory over Italy on the same evening.
  • 24 June 2004: Portugal vs England. England crash out of the European Championship on penalties following a 2-2 draw with Portugal. I really thought that we had a chance of winning it."

World Cup[]

He compensates that, by playing the French national anthem (La Marseillaise) from the Finnish Shouting Choir called Mieskuoro Huutajat.
  • 05 September 2001: England vs Albania (World Cup qualifier). Peel makes several references to England's 2-0 victory at St James' Park. Goals from Michael Owen and Robbie Fowler. "I'm 62 years old. Why do I cry when Robbie scores? Madness."
  • July 2002 (FSK) (21st June 2002): England vs Brazil (World Cup Quarter-Finals). Peel is depressed that England didn't beat Brazil in the World Cup football Quarter-Finals, and was hoping that Michael Owen's leading goal for England would have given hope of a victory. The final score was Brazil 2-1 England. Brazil later on in the competition won the 2002 World Cup beating Germany 2-0 in the final. Peel plays the record on the show which he played at home by Tobias May when Michael Owen scored.
