The Flatbackers were the backing band for Steve Elgin for his Peel session in May 1979, when the group weren't releasing any records. A year later, they performed a session for Peel under their own name.

Julie Usher mentioned in an interview with the Punk Girl Diaries website, that Peel came to their gig at the Moonlight in West Hampstead, North West London, whilst his radio show was being broadcast at the same time and also mentioned remembering saying to Peel, what are you doing here?, without realising his show was prerecorded!
